WHAT CONNECTS OKAS AND MÄETAMM
What connects Evald Okas and Marko Mäetamm?
We challenge the public to look for parallels in the graphic work of two seemingly different artists. Our auction presents a selection of early works by Evald Okas and Marko Mäetamm. The works are located at Haus Gallery, Tallinn, Uus tn 17, where you can get acquainted with them before bidding. The auction is open for bids 15.08 - 15.09.2021
Evald Okas started with graphics in the 1950s. The works presented here are from this and also mainly from the next decade, the 1960s, being figurative and displaying themes of work in the spirit of the era. However, looking at Marko Mäetamm's creative axis, his early graphic sheets were produced when he was studying under Okas as a young artist and when his first overall artworks were completed, namely in the early 1990s. Some of Mäetamm's drawings from that time and Okas's later paintings are also included in the selection for a dash of colour.
Comparing these two names side by side does it not feel that so many connections in art are logically clear, but still unexpected in view of the usual context. Evald Okas was a lecturer at the Department of Graphics at EAA for many years. From 1993 he even became an emeritus professor at Tallinn University of the Arts and taught many extremely well-known and remarkable contemporary graphic artists. Mäetamm among them.
The work of Okas and Mäetamm is so independent in its path that it doesn't really even come to mind to compare them in any way and this has also never been done before. Collaborative exhibitions between students and teachers are nothing new but certain tandems seem even absurd, although perhaps even more exciting.
